"Our Victorian Legacy in the Garden"
by
Isobel Leek
at
The Teikyo School, Framewood
Road, Wexham, Nr Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire
on
Wednesday, 13th June
2007
Commencing at 8.00pm
Miss Isobel Leek is making a welcome return to the Society, having
previously spoken to us in 2006 when her talk was entitled "Seduced by Tulips".
On that occasion she presented a far ranging account of tulips through the
ages, including the remarkable diversity of species within the genus. The
accomplishments of Victorian gardeners, unlke their contemporaries in
architecture and the arts, are too often overlooked. Ranging from the
conspicuous consumption of the rich to the aspirations of the new middle class,
this talk describes the essential part horticulture played in the culture of
the day, based on the non-stop introduction of new species - bedding,
conservatories and stove houses, ferneries, rustic-work and grottoes, not to
mention lawn mowers, fertilizers and pest controls. After a look at public
gardening, we end with the inevitable introduction of yet more new
ideas.
Her talk will be fully illustrated with slides.
